Microsoft Digital Asset Server

Rights Management

The Microsoft Digital Asset Server (DAS) is a highly scalable integrated set of server technologies and components for securing and distributing eBooks to consumers.

The Microsoft Digital Asset Server includes a front and back end:

  • The front end (DAS eCommerce) is installed on the eBookstore site. It identifies the DAS provider, initiates the process to secure and download each purchased eBook to the consumer.
  • The back end (DAS Server) is traditionally installed within the DAS Provider server architecture and is used to secure and download each purchased eBook to the consumer.

According to Microsoft, DAS is useful to you if you are:

  • An author who wants to secure and distribute his or her own eBooks. Authors will likely use the services of a publisher and/or a distributor for DAS services.
  • A pre-press service company that wants to distribute eBooks. The pre-press service can operate its own DAS Service and/or work with a DAS distributor.
  • A publisher that wants to distribute eBooks. The publisher can operate its own DAS service, and/or work with a DAS distributor.
  • A distributor that wants to provide the DAS Service to secure and distribute for one or many eBookstores. A distributor will likely have a network of retailers already interested in opening eBookstores.
  • A retailer (eBookstore) that wants to operate one or many eBookstores. Most of the eBookstores will collaborate with a distributor that will act as a DAS provider. However, an eBookstore can also operate its own DAS service.
  • A technology provider that wants to offer DAS services to retailers and liaise between the owners of digital content and retailers.
