Adobe has announced the beta release of its second Acrobat Reader for Palm handhelds -- Adobe Acrobat Reader for Palm OS 2.0. Speaking recently to Adobe's Product Manager for Readers & eBooks, Jon Lin, he named the additional Mac support, the new european language versions and password protection support as the key extensions to the software, which the company says has received more than 1.5 million downloads since its release in May 2001.

  • Mac platform support: Mac OS 9.X and Mac OS X.1
  • Language localization: French, German and Spanish
  • Password protection of secured PDFs: password protection supporting Acrobat's standard 40 & 128 bit security

For more upmarket Palm handheld users, the latest release also includes high resolution and color support. Yet to come, but one day may eventuate, is the ability to print and fill in forms. For eBook publishers there is no sign of support for any sort of DRM solution like Adobe's Content Server.

The initial beta is only available in the English version. The shipping product is touted for release in June 2002, with language localizations (for French, German and Spanish users) following this release.
