Ernest Hemingway's Entire List Soon to Be Published in Convenient eBook Format
April 30, 2002
NEW YORK -- Ernest Hemingway, the most influential and important literary voice of the 20th century, will soon have his entire list of books made available to readers who are eager to enjoy them in the 21st century's newest format, the electronic book.
Beginning in August, and in time for the beginning of the school year, Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, will publish its catalog of twenty-three Hemingway titles as eBooks. This represents the first time that the collection of a major literary writer of Hemingway's stature will be made available electronically.
"The Hemingway collection is the cornerstone of Scribner's list," commented Susan Moldow, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Scribner. "With its enduring appeal to a huge international audience of general readers, students and academics, it is particularly gratifying to be able to offer these timeless works in publishing's first truly global format. This is an important first step in creating a complete, scholarly electronic library for Hemingway, as well as bringing our classic backlist into the new era of digital publishing."
Kate Tentler, Vice President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster Online, added: "We have seen firsthand, at SimonSays.com, the ongoing high level of interest in Hemingway in the online community. We now have an opportunity to further satisfy that interest by making Hemingway's works accessible to readers anytime, anyplace, and anywhere. Making the Hemingway list available electronically is a unique publishing event that will add long-term strength and breadth to our growing eBook catalog, and help us sustain the double-digit growth we experienced last year."
The Hemingway eBooks, like all titles available electronically from Simon & Schuster, may be purchased at the company's own eBook store, SimonSaysShop.com, at the eBookstore on Yahoo! Shopping (http://shopping.yahoo.com/books/ebooks), and wherever eBooks are sold. All titles will be attractively priced at $9.99.
In addition to publishing the Hemingway list in eBook, Scribner also announced that it would expand the already large academic market for Hemingway permissions by granting, for the first time, electronic permissions for course work. The company has set up a special email address hemingwaypermissions@simonandschuster.com to handle permissions queries.
For seventy-five years, Scribner has been the exclusive American publisher of Hemingway's books. In that time, more than 75 million copies of his works have been sold in over 35 languages throughout the world.
