Adobe Systems Preview Acrobat Reader for Handhelds and Reflowing PDFs at SeyboldSF 2000
Adobe Systems demonstrated two interesting and significant technologies at Seybold SF2000: Adobe Acrobat Reader for handhelds and PDFs containing content that reflowed.
The exhibition of the Acrobat Reader for handhelds is still firmly a technology demonstration, as is the reflow - Adobe are not willing to comment publicly on when either may be released. The technology display showed Acrobat Reader on a Pocket PC, on Sony's latest Palm OS-based handheld, and the ebook-like reader shown below.
Acrobat Reader for handhelds
Both Palm OS and Pocket PCs were demonstrated running Acrobat Reader and appeared relatively stable so it appears we will be seeing an all-new kind of Acrobat Reader for these devices some time in the future. As a side note: those watching this space will be aware that Ansyr Technology Corporation has had a PDF viewer called Primer available on the Pocket PC for some time and also recently announced a version of Primer that runs on the Palm OS.
The standard kind of Acrobat Reader features included:
- Bookmarks
- Zoom In and Out and basic page resizing functionality
- Find
- Select text
